Day 1: Introduction of theme and project details
I was introduced to the class by Jessica, hearing how she described me and my work was very enlightening and encouraging. I spent about 30 minutes explaining the assignment and the aspects required for the final critique, I also shared some examples of the types of imagery they could reference. Jessica had pulled some examples of reductive relief prints from the archives, and it was helpful to show the students physical examples of the process. While I didn’t feel as prepared as I wanted to be, the students were very receptive and attentive during the presentation. Also, they seemed genuinely interested and excited about the theme!
Day 2: Observe class critique for Project #1
The students spent this class period critiquing their 3D mono prints (Project #1). Jessica began the class with a reminder of what the project objectives were, which seemed to act as a baseline for what critiques could be brought to the conversations about each piece. Then she began a discussion about good and bad critique practices and experiences that the students have had. This set the tone and culture for the process of critique, and ultimately created a list of talking points which gave students a possible outline to work from when presenting their piece. I was impressed by the types of critique the students shared, especially the design language that many of them used. It made me think about the possibility of bringing a design professor in as a guest for a critique.
